What we do

Compass Braille transcribes and produces braille in various languages and has been doing so since 1990. Initially Compass Braille worked on Hindi braille Bible transcription and then, as technology progressed, developed new in-house software. Having surpassed the original goal of 11 Indian languages, Compass Braille presently produces braille – mainly braille Bibles – in more than 60 languages and continues to work on new ones. Our products are computer generated so we can produce large or small quantities, and our braille is made using methods that result in a user friendly, durable product.

Who requests our braille

Partner groups request braille for their projects which require reading material to be transcribed, produced and dispatched. Requests come through the United Bible Societies, which operates Bible transcription projects for visually impaired people, and from other outreach groups who produce or use reading materials for their own initiatives.

Who uses our braille

Most of our braille is sent to Bible Societies in Africa and Asia for use in schools and churches, as well as to partner organisations supporting vocational training, self-employment schemes, hostels and drop-in centres. Some is supplied to Mini Braille Bible Libraries in house churches. Our braille is also used at annual summer camps for adults and children, where people with visual impairments can share new experiences alongside sighted participants. Overall, our products are dispatched to more than 125 destinations in over 40 countries across Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe.

Why (not) equal access?

Our policy is to offer EQUAL ACCESS to the Bible and, through the work of our partner groups, we offer INCLUSION and OPPORTUNITY to visually impaired people.
